Goodbye to Autumn

As we prepare to change the clocks and slip officially into Winter Time, we take one last look back at autumn — its fading warmth, its final blaze of colour before the dark begins to settle in.

Our prize-winning photographer for October, Emmet Gavin, had been enjoying his walk across the Wicklow Mountains when he came across this beautifully lit scene. It was close to here that Art O'Neill had succumbed to the harsh winter in 1592 after he made a night-time escape from Dublin Castle.

From November onward, we’re evolving this feature into something more inclusive and exploratory. Rather than a competition, it becomes a monthly photography assignment and learning space — open to anyone, at any level, using any camera or phone.

• One participant, chosen at random, will still receive a pair of Silva Pocket 10X Binocluars each month
• One image will be highlighted as an Editor’s Choice — in recognition, not as a ranking
• Everyone who enters will receive a short personal note in return

More invitation than contest. More discovery than judging.
